Acoustic Scenography sums up everything we do, to immerse the spectator into a narrative experience through the use of sound. We trigger emotions both on a conscious and subconscious level, directing the perception of space and time.

Behind the scenes, we design systems of soft-and hardware to make sure that every bit of content reaches its intended - and only its intended- recipient.
Acoustic Scenography is applied to closed, open, virtual and physical spaces. Our work can be found in museums, show rooms, interactive installations, performances and public spaces.

Finding the right music is like fitting a suit.
We develop, compose, produce and implement all the sound to bring out the best of your brand’s natural physique.
Linear, interactive, TV, Web or POS.

In this section you will find a selection of independent projects and experiments towards perception and aesthetics.

THE BREW YOU RIDE –
HEINEKEN EXPERIENCE

As one of Amsterdam’s biggest tourist attractions, the HEINEKEN EXPERIENCE invites visitors to learn all about the Heineken brand and its famous beer. Tamschick Media + Space extended the exhibition with an immersive multimedia introduction to Heineken’s culture and manufacturing process, the „BREW YOU RIDE“. A wild virtual rollercoaster ride that puts visitors into a mesmerising, gigantic beer kettle, fires them across a bottle line in the Heineken factory and finally transports them to every corner of the world (and beyond) where Heineken beer is enjoyed.

kling klang klong created the Acoustic Scenography for the 500 m2 area with multiple multichannel compositions that also included eight vibrating floor plates. Not only was our task to create an atmospheric soundtrack but also to employ acoustic means effectivelyto enhancethevisitor’s navigation through the exhibition and tostabilise the spatialstructure of the visuals.

CENTER OF MIGRATORY BIRDS

ART+COM Studios transformed Skagen’s historic „Grå Fyr“, the iconic „Grey Lighthouse“ at the northern tip of Denmark, into an international research center and exhibition of bird migration in Continental Europe and Scandinavia.

We designed and produced an Acoustic Scenography that accompanies and guides the visitors on their exploration of scientific insights, real-time observation data and practical birder knowledge. Ranging from realism to impressionism, the Acoustic Scenography unifies the multidimensional approach of the exhibition with atmospheric symphonic themes, multichannel field recordings and sound design for interactive applications. Additionally to the main exhibition, we developed and produced a Soundscape Composition on the acoustic environment and community of Skagen that can be heard as you wait in the ground floor before entering the lighthouse tower.

FJORD & BÆLT

Fjord & Baelt is an open research lab in Kerteminde, Denmark, that investigates the local marine ecosystems of the Great Belt. For the underwater tunnel exhibition developed by Art+Com Studios, we created a multichannel soundscape composition reflecting on the natural forces that influence underwater life.

The structure of our composition is based on environmental data recorded close to the research station in 2016. Among the measured variables are moon phase, sun duration, moon duration, sea level pressure, temperature and humidity. For the piece we translated those variables into musical structures and forms – a musical score. Each data variable is represented through a distinctive musical timbre. Original recordings from the research station provide the source material for those timbres, thus the engine drone of a passing ferry becomes a musical bordun, the clicking sounds of porpoises become a rich sonic texture.

The length of the composition is four hours. In this time, it passes through all recorded data of 2016 and sonifies the entire year in an acoustic time lapse. A day lasts 40 seconds, a month 20 minutes.

In addition to the main composition for the underwater tunnel, we also crafted soundscape compositions for other parts of the exhibition, serving as prelude, interlude and epilogue.

EXPO 2017 - ASTANA KASAKHSTAN

For the World’s EXPO 2017 in Astana (Kazakhstan) Kunzberg curated, designed and produced an extensive and imaginative exhibition about future forms of energy production. Numerous exhibits, immersive video walls and interactive video games illustrate the generation and usage of kinetic, biomass, wind and solar energy.

KLING KLANG KLONG contributed the Acoustic Scenography for the whole exhibition, spanning across 10.000 square-meters and four floors in „Nur Alem“, the main pavilion and landmark of the Expo 2017. A journey through diverse organic soundscapes and musical pieces helps the visitors to immerse themselves into a display of future energy sources. After EXPO 2017 the exhibition will permanently serve as a museum for sustainable energies.

Special thanks to Michael Kadelbach to make this happen for us.

KUKA BRAND EXPERIENCE

In 2016, KUKA opened a new display of history and technology in Augsburg. It is an impressive audiovisual showroom with robotics that can be touched and played with. We equipped it with sensor-controlled player software that provided three main sound zones: music and sound for highlight moments of robotic choreographies and a real-time sound-engine makes sound out of the motion of fingers writing in the air. We also adapted the specific aesthetics used in the showroom’s soundtrack as an aural base for the third part of the KUKA Trilogy, “The Perfect Match”.

VIESMAN

For the Viessmann exhibition at ISH 2015 we created a multichannel-composition to emphasize the impressive visual communication of three LED-towers covering different topics in bold visual language. In order to keep a welcoming acoustic space, we decided to accentuate only key movements with melodic notes. The result was a very pleasant, generative ambient music, conducted by the rhythm of visual information. Without the repetitiveness of rhythmic behavior in common ambient compositions, the sound nicely carried throughout the whole day without wearing off.

MIELE – ZONA TORTONA

This year at Salone del Mobile Milano Miele presented CREATING NEW DIMENSIONS, an immersive walk-in and expansive 360° multi-media experience at Padiglione Visconti, showcasing the new Dialog oven and its sophisticated M Chef cooking technology.
Constantly changing walls covering a length of 80 meters together with a kinetic structure made up of 730 mirror prisms in this 1000 square meters installation at Zone Tortona was the perfect setting to create an immersive sound experience playing with the ever morphing perception of room size and haptics.

It was our mission to involve the highly sophisticated audience of Milan’s well renowned design week in this 40 minute ride. To achieve this goal we developed a unique, bold and modern sound identity leading the spectator through the complex emotional narrative with 7 musical themes. The multichannel-sound design and spatial music mix together with the elaborated Kinetic Video Design from our partners florafaunavisions created an experience which kept people's attention throughout the show and caused quite some noise at Zona Tortona.

DISCO DUSCHE

DISCO DUSCHE is an interactive dance floor. With sound and light as an intuitive spatial interface, visitors create a music track through their movement in space. Though, the interaction design and rules for music creation change over time. In order to get to the next stage, visitors have to work together and intuitively discover different ways of musical performance.

The installation works with headphones and is completely silent from the outside. Visitors can only hear their own performance and sometimes also the performance of others.

AUDI SPARK NIGHT

We were invited as panelists to demonstrate one of our motion-to-music experiments for the sound edition of Audi Spark Night. Among makers of robotic drum computers, sound tanks and other amazing guests, we installed our “sonic luminescence“ live in front of 200 people. Afterwards, it was open for everyone to try it out themselves and intuitively explore the sphere of sound.

SOAP & MILK

With „Soap and Milk“, Waltz Binaire created a mesmerizing interactive installation that turns social media into an organic entity. Every tweet that refers to the installation generates one microscopic droplet on the screen.

Viewers can interact with those droplets and explore their behavior until they vanish into a vivid setting. kling klang klong was invited to design, compose and program an interactive, tangible soundscape for the installation.

COLLIDE - DOLBY GALLERY

We developed and executed this “virtual to reality” audio concept as the soundtrack to the installation “Collide”, which was displayed in the Dolby Gallery in San Francisco, CA, as a collaboration with the
visual-coding studio onformative.

In short, we wrote an open musical composition for three cellists, using a modified version of the visuals to conduct the score. Each cellist saw only a section of the film through VR goggles and had to react to the “visual timbre” while playing the composition. We then composed the
final soundtrack based on the recording.

The final 3D-Mix on Dolby Atmos (54 speakers in addition to 17 subs) at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco made it possible to spatially link events in the film with the individual dynamics of the cello recordings.

BIG PRINTER

Data and its use are fiercely discussed among people and their governments these days. The „Big Printer“ encourages awareness of data being collected but leaves the choice of how to deal with it to the individual. As Wroclaw was named culture capital of Europe 2016, Goethe Instiute displayed this collaboration with schnellebuntebilder on Plac Nowy Targ, Wroclaw.

NOTE
After our vernissage we met David Ebner and Tobias Zimmer with their work "Database", that was presented some months before "Big Printer" and deals with the same topic in a very similar way. We would like to bring your attention to their work as well:

MIRROR

“Mirror” is a collaboration with visual coding studio schnellebuntebilder. The VR-Installation analysizes the user’s movement and transforms it into a glitched reflection. Bending time and space, “Mirror” constantly breaks common patterns of perception and asks us to think about what is real and what’s constructed in our brain, therefore questioning the relation between reality and virtual reality in general.

A Max MSP patch follows head and limb positions and generates a fascinating sound experience. Our binaural renderer tricks the brain into a full 3D-illusion of ever changing room around you, and your movement in it.

“Mirror” premiered at the “Node - festival for digital arts” in April 2015.

A RHYTHM YOU
DIDN'T CREATE

A Rythm you didn't create is an open composition for six vocalists, played back on an eight multi channel system.
Based on the individual breathing cycle of each vocalist, the piece has no metrum itself, thus forming a textured soundscape.

The recorded piece was shown alongside with the Installation "BREATH ing HEART" of Johanna Keimeyer at Art Basel 2017 in the historic water filter building Filter 4.

About the installation:
BREATH ing HEART is an art installation of a walk-in heart, that accommodates up to 20 people at once. This heart fills itself with air and pulses in a breathing rhythm accompanied by light, scent, and sound. In this installation visitors can experience what it’s like to be inside their own body guided by the artist’s voice via headphones.

MOMENTUM

KLING KLANG KLONG and schnellebuntebilder developed an interactive framework to create synaesthetic experiences of sound and visuals generated from body movements.
In “MOMENTUM”, their first collaborative work, the user and his or her surroundings transform into a fluid creature within a continuously transforming system of particles. It’s a virtual reality in which movement becomes sound and where matter seems to dissolve. So far it has been displayed at CES Las Vegas 2015, CTM Berlin 2015, Telekom Electronic Beats 2016
